Pine trees are reverenced as a symbol of rebirth since ancient times in Japan for being ever green. Kojima painted trunks and green leaves stereoscopically with bold and massive strokes, which remind us of Jomon earthenware. He depicted the four seasons by simplifying what he saw as if he was composing haiku, traditional Japanese short poems.
